Outreach Programs

BalletNova Center for Dance (formerly Arlington Center for Dance) has been a part of the Northern Virginia arts and cultural community for more than 30 years, producing accessible and affordable dance performances that inspire and entertain.

MOVE! Comunity Engagement Program

BalletNova Center for Dance has initiated a new community outreach program in 2016-2017 called MOVE which stands for:
            M – motivation
                O – opportunity
                    V – vitality
                            E – empowerment
Through school partnerships, workshops, and public performances, MOVE uses dance as a catalyst to empower children and motivate them towards excellence.
The program is modeled after the well-respected National Dance Institute (NDI) program founded by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Jacques D’Amboise. BalletNova is an official NDI Affiliate.
MOVE is designed for elementary and middle school-aged children who are not required to have any previous dance training. There is no charge to the student - grant, corporate funds, and some school fees are sought to support the MOVE Program and keep it affordable for public schools.
The pedagogy utilizes pedestrian movements all children are familiar with as a starting point to develop accessible and sophisticated choreography which transmit the students high energy and spirit. A key component of MOVE is live accompaniment during classes (piano, or percussion). A Master Teacher and Musician lead every class.
MOVE programs can be designed as short 6 – 8 week residencies or as a full academic-year program with classes on a weekly basis.
Students who demonstrate particular affinity and interest in dance are invited to join a more advanced group called SuperNovas! The SuperNovas receive additional weekly classes (at no charge) and learn more complex choreography to be performed at the Fredgren Studio Theatre, and other free public performances. SuperNovas who demonstrate interest and potential for ballet training will be invited to join the BalletNova Pre-professional program on scholarship.
We believe access to high quality arts education is integral to every child's education. Through MOVE we aim to deepen our engagement with our community and expect the program to open new horizons for children and families. For more information, email espatz@BalletNova.org
