The Board, leadership, faculty and staff of BalletNova are delighted to announce that on August 1, Matthew Powell will be joining BalletNova as Artistic Director. Powell will be assuming leadership of the Artistic Division and will build upon the teaching and choreography he has done for BalletNova in the past several years.
Powell received his training at the School of American Ballet and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Performing Arts from St. Mary’s College. He danced professionally with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, San Francisco Opera, and the international tour of West Side Story, among others.
As a choreographer, Powell was awarded a fellowship from the New York Choreographic Institute, an affiliate of New York City Ballet. BalletNova students and their families will recall Powell’s delightful and lighthearted choreography of La Fille Mal Gardeé, which he created for our Spring Performance last May. He has also created works for Kansas City Ballet, Joffrey Ballet School, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Point Park University, Broadway Dance Center, and the art exhibit 'Capturing Nureyev.' Powell also works as on-set choreographer for BLOCH dancewear, where he has worked with luminaries such as Misty Copeland, Dusty Button, and David Hallberg.
As a Ballet Master, Powell’s credits include Royal New Zealand Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Slovak National Ballet, Oklahoma City Ballet and the television show Flesh and Bone, which aired on the STARZ Network. His extensive teaching experience includes The Juilliard School, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Rock School for Dance Education, Ballet Hispanico, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, Broadway Dance Center, Peridance, Ballet Tech, Kansas City Ballet School, Trey McIntyre Project, Matthew Bourne, Karole Armitage, Billy Elliot on Broadway, Universities of Iowa and Alabama, and, of course BalletNova, where last summer students flocked to his classes during summer intensives.
Matthew is highly regarded by BalletNova students and faculty – as well as in the greater ballet community – as an inspiring teacher who instills professionalism and dedication in his students.
Of his appointment as Artistic Director of BalletNova, Powell said, “I am beyond thrilled to be joining the family at BalletNova! This is an institution full of talented and hard-working students, faculty and staff, and nothing brings me more pleasure than to honor the long-standing legacy of founders Ken and Kathy Fredgren. I thank the Board and transition team for this opportunity, and I look forward to doing my best to ensure we continue to provide our community with the highest quality of classical ballet training as the school enters its 39th year.”
Constance Walsh, who will continue in her current role and titles, said, “Welcome to our new Artistic Director, Matthew Powell. As we look to the future, I am confident Matthew will be a great addition to our leadership team at BalletNova. His energy, creativity and focus will lead us forward as we continue to grow as a leading dance organization in the DC metro area.”
Please welcome Matthew Powell to BalletNova!
